January 5, 2010 As We Start the New Year
As we start the New Year, there are all sorts of resolutions to make and stories about the resolutions we should consider making. If you could just add the resolution to “buy your birdseed from the Irvine Nature Store” to your list, not only would you be purchasing seed that the birds actually eat, you would be helping to support an organization that does excellent environmental education, is local and really needs and appreciates you. Try our seed and you will see the difference – ask for a free sample to take home and try in your feeder.
I know you gardeners (me too!), now that we’re pass New Years and the winter doldrums have really set in, you’re dreaming about the plants you are going to put in and the new gardens you want to create. Maybe you want to plant some new shrubs this spring. Are there any “deer proof” plants? How can I make a butterfly garden? Well I’m sitting down this week and making a list of the plants I want to have on hand to sell this spring and I can hardly wait. I’ll also be attending the MANTS (Mid Atlantic Nursery Trade Show) conference on January 9th in Baltimore, talking to vendors and ordering garden products. Let me know what plants you are dreaming about and what gardening products you are looking for – This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. So far, I have new rain barrels coming, great gardening gloves, sloggers and new this year –
Back to January, maple sugaring products will be flowing into the Nature Store in anticipation of all the wonderful maple sugar walks that will soon start. Stop in mid January to purchase a kit that you can use to try you hand at making your own maple syrup. It’s a wonderful time to visit the nature center, take a winter walk and come to the store for some free hot chocolate – mention you’ve read my blog. Stay warm and please buy your seed from Irvine – the birds know the difference! Leafgro® "It's a Natural" because it's 100% Organic! Leafgro® is a superior quality compost used extensively by the landscape industry and homeowners as a source of humus for soil improvement. Leafgro® is an outstanding example of recycling at its best. By composting leaves and grass clippings that would have normally been disposed of in a landfill, the Maryland Environmental Service converts organic wastes into a valuable resource.
