The art work will be exhibited in the Fern Room of Irvine Nature Center’s new green building in Owings Mills, MD. Students from the following schools will exhibit their work: Deer Park Middle Magnet, Friends School of Baltimore, Hereford Middle School, New Town High School, Parkville High School, Perry Hall Middle School, Pine Grove Middle School, Ridgley Middle School, and Sparrows Point High School will create their interpretive work based on the attributes of native animals (birds, insects, and bats).
In preparation for student participation in the exhibition, teachers were provided with natural history lessons based on the “All Things Wings…” theme, in an effort to open students’ minds to the broad genre of art inspired by science, nature, and environmental issues. “We are excited about this opportunity to once again bring environmental literacy skills to students we serve in the Baltimore area,” said Irvine Executive Director, Peggy F. O’Neill. “We are also eager to share the work of these very talented students who are passionate about the beauty that can be found in the creatures of the natural world with Irvine visitors.” During the reception on March 27, prizes will be awarded for winning artwork based on grade level. Winning work will also be published in the Summer 2009 edition of Irvine Nature Center’s newsletter, Understory, and posted on www.ExploreNature.org.
